In 1957, my first Boxer came into my life. His name was Kelly, and he was almost the brother I had never had. When he died a month before his tenth birthday, I grieved for months and could never imagine another Boxer in my home. Twenty-six years later, I was finally able to contemplate allowing another Boxer to enter my heart, and so Mephisto’s Thief of Hearts came to live in my heart and home. He was a son of the great Can., Am. Ch. Mephisto’s Rosenkavalier and of his half-sister, Mephisto’s Queen of Spades, a litter sister to Can., Am. Ch. Mephisto’s Citizen Kane. A breed winner and Group-placed at seven months, Dillon was not with me long, and so it came to be that in December of 1994, I drove out to Walter and Monika Pinsker’s to bring home Dillon’s nephew, a son of Can., Am., Jap., Int. Ch. Mephisto’s Guns and Roses out of a daughter of the great Can., Am. Golden Haze Tuxedo. His name: Mephisto’s War O’ The Roses. Like me, he was an only “child,” and became one of the very few owner-handled Canadian and American champions as well as a Canadian Sire of Merit. Dudley combined substance, great elegance, and remarkable showmanship. Dudley was with me until late winter of 2004 when I could no longer ask him to continue to struggle against the ravages of Degenerative Myelopathy. It is my hope that in the years to come, I will find his like again among my future litters.
